The Trend of American Girl Doll Memes and What it Means for the AG Community
Hello everyone! Recently, AllycatlovesAG made a video about the current trend in American Girl doll memes! It was really interesting, so I wanted to talk about them myself, but I want to focus more on how the trend will affect the online AG community that started out in 2007, over ten years before the memes became popular.
First off, though, I want to quickly explain the trend, because I didn't know much about it until today.
Basically, in late 2021, with everything going on in the world, people started creating Instagram accounts to make memes about current events. Some of these people had been doll collectors when they were younger, so they had their memes feature dolls to be funny and nostalgic.
This year, the memes really started to blow up, and even though they feature dolls, they are not always that appropriate. Except for the "We need an American Girl doll who . . ." memes, most of them aren't related to the dolls at all, but instead just have something with current events or song lyrics, and a doll in the background.
My theory on all this actually involves that meme that was circulating in 2020, with a pretend GOTY named Karen. If you haven't seen it, I won't add a picture, because it's not super appropriate. Anyways, point being, it was very popular.
Throughout 2020, that meme circulated, along with ones about future historical dolls who lived during the pandemic.
This is a photo of one of those memes that my mom sent me! As I collector, I want to make it known that the dolls' meet accessories are typically between 25 and 35 dollars, not 86, but anyways . . .
I feel like people realized that other memes combining dolls and current events would be funny, and so the trend of AG memes took off!
Now (finally!), we're going to talk about how this will affect the AG community!
I feel like in a best case scenario, it will give AGTubers, AGIGers, and doll bloggers some good publicity. If enough people get really interested in the AG memes, they might start looking for other doll content, and discover the actual AG community. I think the most publicity we've ever gotten was a BuzzFeed article saying AGSMs were weird and creepy, which is really not what we needed.
Speaking of negative publicity, even though I am not on Instagram, I know that many AGTubers are, along with all the people who make AG memes. Though the the meme accounts could give AGIGers some publicity, they could also draw attention away from them, which is not so good.
Though the AG memes are funny, I really hope all they do is give the AG community a little push, because we were around first and we've been doing this for fifteen years, without ever really becoming popular, so I would be pretty upset if these memes overshadowed the creators who have been around for years.
That is all for today! Be sure to comment down below your thoughts on the AG meme trend and how you think it will affect the community!
Bye!

I agree, this isn't the type of publicity the AG community needs. I'm sad to see that some people think AGSMs are creepy, because I generally enjoy making them (and watching them). Sure, there will be weird ones if you look hard enough, but even in the most "normal" communities there will be weird things. (Sadly, even a YouTuber I like Jessii Vee said in one of her videos, that AGSMs are creepy, which is just sad).
ReplyDeleteAnyway I agree, and I hope AG and doll community gets more respect in the future.

Wow. I never have really seen the AG memes tbh. I know some people who think AGSM are creepy, but I like them! I know some people have different opinions, and thats OK. But why make fun of AG? So many people do it to pass time and enjoy it like me. When my sister was still a doll blogger the Ag blogging community was huge! And most of those followers were doll bloggers. She had like 397 followers. But after a few years people started going on IG and it started to die, and some people got bored of it. I really wish when I started my blog there were more doll bloggers, and less people on IG because lots of people dont want IG, like me. And others parents wont allow it, and you cant just go onto IG when you dont have permission. And when it was on Wordpress or Blogger so many more people could check them out and make their own blogs. I think this is sad.. It seems like Ag is falling apart with there quality and their buisness more and more..
